Ah, the Humanities!

GENERATION
creation
origination
invention
innovation
initiation
inauguration
instigation
authorization

What we get when we
teach literature courses …

(if not too trapped in the faux-SCIENCE
tar-baby paradigm which permeates the
enterprise like amniotic fluid mixed meta
force not with standing so that we perpetuate
the sequencing & chronological taxonomies
measuring & assessing, classifying &
categorizing according to the shoulder blades
of them who have gone before us delving into
backgrounds of authors & periods & ages &
social science & behavioralism, because & affect
influences and reasons why so that any student
might be empowered to identify a sample
specimen, textually assault & demonstrate
where it came from & how it relates to the
whole work, genre, period, age…etc)

…are wonderfully stupid (stunning)
inquiries into “ART,” and how come
observations about a red wheelbarrow
and chickens in the rain or plums in
the refrigerator warrant inclusion in
the anthology so that we can:

reinvent wheels; start up from old
scratch, zero base: let’s say (assume)
we don’t know squat—what’s good
and what’s not: I don’t care how many
high school & college English courses
you’ve had before you reach mine.
We’re starting all over again so as to
collaborate & conceive immaculately
as it were in manners of speaking:

creating
originating
inventing
innovating
initiating
inaugurating
instigating
authorizing
generating a
new idea &
a manifest
embodiment
of our own.

You got a problem with that?

Can’t do this in physics, chemistry,
biology: that operation south of
Carson: too much practical voc-tech
ground to cover in order to get smart
& into grad school these trying and
economically troubling days.

Up in Kittredge and Holden and points north?
Sure. They’re at home with “GENERATION”:
call it briar patch. Free Play. Free Spirits. What
do they care? Makers & Shakers: our stalwart
pioneers advance guard: toward frontiers yet
unknown.

Jensen Humanities: Malcontent in the Middle:
torn between 2 lovers, I’m sure. An agony—
to be rigorously scientific on the one hand,
and yet spontaneous & artistic on the other.

2 Economies and excruciating. You can tell:
walk through our halls :witness silent generation
suffering a mass of quiet desperation..

Do I overstate? I am large.
& contain multi-tasking.
