The Government: remember:
there’s no such “thing”—it’s
a term for a network, web of
relays and relationship of on
going negative and positive
feedback loops. You can’t
touch this—or Warren Wilson
College either.

To ascribe any action to The
Government or to Warren Wilson
is a manner of speaking only and a
convenient convention and literally
nonsense even if practiced by mob,
populace, common people, the
general public & vulgate. .

Theorize if you must. We must interpret,
explain, blame, tell reason’s why—scape
goat our fictions to live and die by. All
these ways to skin a cat and category.

Come, let us reason together.
Conspire to tell a truth. Make
some sense of our own.

But please: may we share and sustain a
distinction (so as not to collapse, conflate,
& confuse) between

The SPIRIT
( L.spirare: to breathe)
& the Letter
I.E deph (“to stamp”)

LAW

Here’s the Great Divide:

Spirit: the idea, the intent, the heart, the
animation, the “whole": which can never be
represented adequately, by letter: nailed down
again and again of course, noun- ified. reduced
for convenience and convention’s sake, sure—
rendered in disciplines & traditions & common
sense, but always an abuse, yes? a rip-off,
piece meal violation & fiction fashioned for USE:
interpretation, explanation, blamation, reasons-why,
because & affect—scapegoating.

LETTER: the representation, reduced, literal-ized,
nitty-gritty bottom-lined, typed, stereotyped, typical-
ized. Made literate for the literate. Fictionalized to
stand-for the whole, the part, the event, hap happening,
formalized, institutionalized. industrialized, commodified
for convenience, conflated and collapsed for use &
abuse, & our need-we-argue needs.

Some questions for a Final
Examination (say) :

Is it possible for me to act in accord with the Letter of
the Law and not the spirit? Can I think in terms of the
letter of the law and not the spirit?

Or vice versa: might I act in accord with the spirit of the
law and not the letter? Think in terms of the spirit but
be quite inarticulate according to the letter?

Could we conspire in accord with the letter and not
the spirit of the law? And vice versa?

In your own words, terms, images, imagination:
what’s the difference and what’s the relationship
between the Spirit and the Letter of the Law?

Go ahead: quibble if you don’t like my terms.
You can represent the distinction (and the
relationship) in your own. This is FICTION
class, after all: Jensen habitat for crying out
loud. Not yr. Witherspoonian, Morse & Spidel
environmentality. .

There’s a difference that makes a difference,
