The Amateur-izaton of The Profession.

Dear Paula,

The Amateurization of The Profession.

We’re all  up to our gnosis in final  week busy-ness,
so I don’t  expect response,  reaction,
proper
improvement of my terms and assumptions..

The summer stretches across the universe  of our
imaginations  & curricular-concerns & no matter
where we’ll be, we’re in  touch and engaged  & all
in the family, kin & kind: a  part even apart.

This is the new normal, yes?.

                  &&&&

     Can For-the-Love-of- IT
                     and
               For PAY
        Just Get Along?

Alice Amateur and  Pete Professional bump
into each other at the Crossroads,  and
repair to a bar to consider the  damage done.

           Who will be boss? .

This is how I personify & mythologize so as
to embody and manifest abstractions so as
to put them in play. Dramatize. .

Let not the 2 be falsely collapsed.  Radically
different & appropriately hostile  values
(amateur & professional)  and how they get
along—or not—is  crucial & the crux of the matter. .

         Which would you rather lose:
            your amateur standing or
           your professional standing?

Team Professional Patriarchy dominates,  don’t you
agree?  I’ll pay you  for  your services. You pay me
for mine. No free lunch. Common sense.  Tit for tact.
Etc. .

Not long ago, some idiot in the  community would NOT
have this kind of  access  to public forum, not because
of  censorship but  techno-logically we hadn’t evolved
this far.

It makes a difference that makes a Difference with
regard to everything: learning, teaching, regulating,
accrediting, documenting, plagiarizing, rabid rapid
free exchange of noggin notions, fashion & style,
social relationships, communication  across the
universe and the impact on day-to-day: such tink
a tank tunk and hullabaloo,  as Wallace Stevens
might say.

We  must factory-it-all in, don’t  you agree? —as
professionals and  amateurs. Put it in play.  Recalibrate.
Reconfigure, Reformat & formulate a Reformation. of
mind-set &  attitude: reconstitute the milieu, say: the
Other Environment.

In considering  the  philosophy of  learning  and teaching
(the p in our phd) as opposed to house keeping ecological
issues …

(governance,
budget,  the
specifics of disciplines,
recruiting, image & PR,
forest use, no swimming
in the swimming pond…),

we would be addressing for the first time since I’ve been
here:

               The other Environment.

Domological, call it.
Domain issues (dominion, dominance concerns)
as opposed to the ecologic, seeing as   “house” is
not  “home” and  we can’t collapse or  conflate
the 2  without confusing the issues.

Not talking golf carts & Leeds, recycling & oil
spills, the  environmentalism that  pays efficient
attention  to climate and  nature and  physical
resources—but  rather our mysterious ambient
atmosphere & spirit,  local zeitgeist: intangible
and un-substantial, the Internal Psychological
Environment and Shared Unconscious  Frame
of Mind inside  which  we do our  work—as
professionals professing professionally. ..

Our local culture traps.
Our Invisible On the One Hand & On the Other,
the shape shifting  parameters & structural
dichotomies transparent not in the  way  they
can be seen—but  just the opposite: beyond  our
rationalizing grasp and   manipulation.  Our hidden
assumptions and controlling metaphors concealed
like truffles and  protected like  family jewels..

Like trying to raise the dread, Paula—presumptuous
grandiosity not with standing. Stirring the somnolent:
us necrophiladelphians: dead in denial filtering  our
literacy-agenda against  the  galloping  reformation
of  post-literacy and  neo-oral environmentalism
so to speak. .

I call for a collective brain washing:
washed  in the flood of our spam:
scrub a dub  dub  For the hard of
hearing we  got to  yell, says
Flannery O & good slams
are hard to find..

How to tweak the  professional professionally without
reinforcing the professionalism?  Got to pay us  to think:
stipends & released  time, damnit,  faculty  developmental
funding and  the pay-me-actions speak louder than words.

We pros.

              Mission Impossible.

Reinvent the wheels of liberal  art, if not  the liberal arts.
Zero base our thinking up from old scratch.  That’s how
I’d frame our PLT: the Philosophy of Learning & Teaching
self-service project.  Edification, call it, as opposed to
education.

Turn up the proper ongoing  foe -dichotomy  between the
amateur and the pro,and keep it in play so as  to work-up
shared emergency   phenomenon and  values we might
invest in—stake holders as  we say  these days rather
than share holders as we used to call it when we
“owned” the place--so to speak. Always in
manners of speaking.
