Across the Curriculum.
I wonder if and when it night
become instrumentally obvious
and practically useful: how
radically and appropriately
“hostile” & incommensurate
the two sets of values
amateur & professional
are?
Each time I spam a “Dear Paula”
post, I myself feel the difference
between the 2. Viscerally. What
god has separated, let no myn
collapse, conflate, and confuse?
“This is NOT professional, Sam”
I know. Exactly: A clash of values,
frontier yet unknown.
me and Dr. Bradshaw (or K)
in the same room, on the
same committee. say.
Vive la difference?
“Without Contraries Is No Progress”
and what an adrenalin rush: alive,
alive ho in the crash of
opposition.
Remember Hawkins’ 2 Economies?:
For love and for money. Separate
and turn up the worthy opposition,
polarize, characterize (Alice Amateur,
Peter Pro) so the 2 don’t contaminate
conceptually & let them talk to each
other & wonder what it takes to
just get along: for the hell of it
for heaven’s sakes.
A strategic plan: the marriage
of heaven and hello!.
Eternally, the 2 don’t mix. Pure as
driven snow: Oil & Water. Rigor &
Innovation. Play & Work Programs.
Foolishness & Sobriety. Playboy &
Puritan.
Sure: they mix in realtime.
But conceptually?
Sustain the immaculate conceptions.
Then there’s possibility for a decent
relationship just in time: angles who
fear to tread & fools who just
rush in--all in the academic
family: rigorous and yet
innovative. . .
xxxooo, Sam
