Dear Colleagues,
 
At this stage in your career, can you imagine
the value of  wondering about the relationship
between  representation on the one hand
and on the other hand: REALITY?
 
…snicker, if not snort…:
 
I acknowledge the value of this almost immediate
emergent supra-segmental signal, Jeff H. having
appropriately tagged the phenomena earlier this
spring: a kinetic pre-linguistic sign of noetic border-
clash,: 2 or more seemingly disparate value-sets or
systems bisect: a collision  providing a stimulus
package for the generation of comedy, tragedy,
or invention.  Emergent properties.

On the one hand: my proficiency in a discipline,
years  of study & PhDegreed  expertise, every
day uses & practical applications. GetRdone—
some literary criticism & textual harassment &
the search for hidden meanings and split
infinitives.
 
On the other hand: the media is the message and
from time to time I look up from old  scratch,
zero-base my thinking and consider the nature
of representation (the linguistic constructions,
images, metaphors, assumptions: hammers &
tongs of any  disciplinary trade, as well as the
determinative webs of convention and common
sense they weave)—and I presume to reinvent
wheels of  thought and expression. Born again
& again, for crying out loud—cerebral/ affective
renaissances of  disciplinary delight.
 
But: confusing like anything.
To repent—turning back to the source of
practice and invention so as to wonder
about relationships between  re-presentations
and my realities---monkey- wrenches my
normal  proceedings: under cuts my busyness.
 
I Goedel-ize myself: claiming to bootstrap out
of my disciplinary box while clarifying the box
that boxes me—or bubbles, caves, closets,
conventionalizes, customizes. cultures and
acculturates me: Houdini!
 
Fundamental Studies & Leadership programs.
 
What IS “reality” for crying out loud.?  And
how do our  Ways of Talking determine our
Ways of  Considering and vice versa? Can
you imagine the Physicist  raising this question?
The Chemist?  The  Biologist? Anthropologist?
Sociologist? etc.
 
Of  course. They all do. Stalwart pioneering
toward frontiers yet unknown. Heart of  the
heart of the liberal art:  P in our Phdegrees.
But to play with it & get-stuff-done at the
same time?  Unprofessional.
