Taught by one or several in collaboration,
this size fits all subject-matter and content
throughout 4-5 years. Students will “take”
c. 32 of these as undergraduates —more in
grad school.. It is considered the standard
vehicle for both rigor and innovation.
Time tested and proven for centuries, this
“old school” structure has been media and
means for institutionalized credit-acquisition
and diploma-conferring degreed education
since before telephone and telegraph, and still
survives—seemingly robust and hardy—in the
mist of smart & video phones, I-Pad, Internet,
Kindle, Google, e-mail, Skype, blog, twitter,
facebook , myspace, photo-tech & tweak
texting, sexting, gaming and instant messaging
across the universe.
A good chance your grandparents and theirs
experienced this very same packaging No
matter the token content, this structure
(called a “course”) is what students
actually learn: they get more
and less GOOD at taking
“courses.”
It's quite possible that this is the course
“paradigm” Ray Anderson questions when
he challenges us to subvert and reconfigure,
demoralize and reconstruct the processes of
educating as he has done in his industry
and commerce. Greening!
Greening: thinking in ways different from
the ways-of-thinking that generated the
problems we feel confront us in these
turbulent and tumultuous times—leaning
in to listen to our home-schooled students,
and others from alternative-learning
programs attracted to our seemingly radical
environmental goals and ideals, polling our
low-residential MFA practices to wonder
how many ways there are to skin an
educational cat and category.
Strateegery!
When Buckminster Fuller attempted to solve
transportation and housing problems with his
intelligent geodesic designs, he failed.. They
didn't cog into the established system or
symptoms which as long as it's not broken,
why fix it?
Timing is all. The Course feels-like the most
Sustainable and Sustaining Unit and structure
we know, have known, will know into the
seeable future.
Inconceivable that it would ever be reconfigured,
reformatted, transformed systemically to re-address
the symptoms it now seemingly addresses so well.
It would take a village. A shared sense of insufficiency
and un-sustainability. A whole lot of people would
have to feel it's increasing inadequacy. A gut feeling.
Visceral. Otherwise throw rice at a rhino, pingpong
balls at tanks. Which, I don't mind doingL it’s a fool's
errand with it's own rewards and immediate
gratification.

Scroll down: here’s what four years of education looks
like structurally.
