No Doubt: No Thinking
DOUBT
Diminutive of “double.”
To doubt is to double:.
1) on the one hand and
1) yet on the other hand.
Doubtfulness as opposed
to single-mindedness.
Do you prefer to be
doubtful or single-
minded?
See:
right there:
a doubling, damnit.
The heart of thinking is
doubting: doubling, drawing
descriptive lines of distinction
and then quite often choosing,
preferring one to the other.
The other might be sent
to the attic or to the cellar.
Draw a line between what goes
on in this class and what does not.
Claim that the inside of the class
is that counts, what’s outside doesn’t.
Now you have the basis for A.D.D
if not A.D.H.D
A matter of doubt and doubling.
It’s called thinking.
Drawing lines of distinction and
than choosing one. for practical
purposes. An inclusive/ exclusive
activity which occludes all the rest.
Think about how you think and see
if its not fundamentally a matter
of doubling, distinguishing,
differentiating.
Linguists and information theorists
define MEANING as a difference
that makes a difference. If you
think about that definition, it’s
difficult to get more basic. You
might find strawberries and songs
meaningful, lakes and road trips,
conversation and shoes even while
someone else calls them meaningless
because meaning isn’t in the things
and nothings but in the difference
that makes a difference to the
meaning-maker.
Like and dis-like. Love & hate
Rise up, emerging phenomenon
from not just difference, but
from difference that makes
a difference.
MEANING means what is
meaningful to you. Differences
that make a difference. A distinction,
a differentiation, a doubling.
*************
Here’s a practical distinction (meaningful)
RELATIONSHIP-GOING-On
versus
Taking Care of Business going on.
I seem to be talking about doubt and
difference and meaning (taking care
of business) but I’m expressing me,
myself, and I: see me, hear me, touch
me, feed me. Me-ing.
Some may call it narcissistic. the
ME-FACTOR, factoring ME in. Call
it what you like. It’s part of every
utterance and communication.
You may insist that we are arguing about
who paid for dinner last, who’s responsible
for Jonny’s jail time, who let the dog out,
whether Global warming is warming…
BUT IT’s about the arguers arguing.
It’s about US—our RELATIONSHIP
going on and those subjects are mere
“taking care of business” : token topics
expressing relationship war & peace.
DOUBT . Doubleness.
Relationship on the one hand,;
Taking Care of Business on the Other.
Which is fore-grounded? Which is
backgrounded. Can both be In Play
simultaneously? Not without
DOUBT: doubling.
Another doubting doubling for
consideration:
Describe mode / Value & Judge mode
(intellective) (affective: feeling)
Any smart student, under the gun-to-head
environment of institutional education will
take advantage of the system to get away
with as little as he can when he can so as to
optimize his time spent where it counts: is
meaningful—a difference that makes a
difference to him
This statement can be said to be BOTH
a description (aesthetics) and a
judgment/valuing (ethics)
Every utterance can be assessed in terms of
its descriptive-to-evaluative ratios (as
well as in terms of its Relationship-to-
Taking Care of Businses ratios.)
************
I am “intellectualizing” aspects of the
language-communicative process
Drawing distinctions and labeling them
It’s reduction, simplification – one might
justifiably say a violence and rip-off of to
the WHOLE. Would that be description
or judgment?
Whatever.
It’s an example of thinking.
Drawing distinctions, turning up
differences: putting them in
play.
How do you describe your thinking?
Or do you think about thinking?
OR just do it. There’s a doubt-doubling
right there: just doing on the one hand
thinking about the just doing on the
other hand—and then thinking about
the thinking about the “just doing” on
the third hand.
