Babel & Blather
is what I should call my Intro to Language Course.
OR Dialogue and Dialectic, which actually names
my favorite “offering,” favorite only because it’s
the most honest title—closest to what I actually
try to encourage
Or Stupid Club, which was the name of my First
Year Seminar and as you probably realize: it’s all
the SAME—
my so-called courses:
different topics and content,
different “players’ (or non-players);
but it’s all the same deal: babel and blather,
dialogue and dialectic: Stupid Club & no smarty-
pants need apply unless maybe you can suspend
your cover-up.
“How can he use his ignorance which his growth
requires, “ says Thoreau, “who has always to be
using his knowledge.”

Nature loves redundancy even if Eng. Teachers
& Creative Fiction & Non-Fiction righters don’t.
Different agenda. Different context. Different
environment and environmental issues issuing.
To make Familiar Strange
and Strange Familiar;
to Afflict the Comfortable
and Comfort the Afflicted.
Something like might could
be said to be the Liberal Art..
How to frame IT so it’s sport, game: a “good thing”
that invites and factors-in awful discombobulation,
undercutting common sense, subversive & demoralizing
deconstruction necessary to get down to brass tacks, as
it were, a-poria: a state of no pores, no passages,
no exit bottoming out so that oooomygawd is not just
exclamation but somewhat prayer, too & precarious —
seeing as that state of minding (stunned, stunning) was
considered by early Greeks and current Zen-ists as
as prerequisite for the beginnings philosophy and
probably religion.
Where else and in what context is Babel and Blather
if not par at least part of the course?
I’m asking.
Something like that might could be called Liberal Art,
stalwart pioneering pressing toward frontiers yet unknown
as opposed to the liberal arts: them majors & minors, pre-
wrecks & capstones & portfolios-- measure-mental aims
and goals and objectives we cherish: hold on, hold on to
what we got. .
Gold of sun across a sky: cast of mountain blue, Glorious
banner, heaven high, calls us to be true. Take your place
and do with us what tomorrow needs of you.
(When the shadows sweep the light from the face of day,
Songs of freedom break the night. This is what they say:
God who raised our hills of home guard our fortress still,
Walk with us along the way, teach us wisdom ‘till: like a
thousand stars by night we shall faithfully lead the way.)
Strangely familiar & all in the family. Local Food. Green
grow the rushes, ho. Renewable resource fullness. How
can we use/abuse our ignorance, colleagues my
colleagues, which our growth requires, who have
always to be using/abusing our knowledge?
I’m just asking again and again..
No one has to beg to differ.
xxxooo, Sam
