Figure to Background Savvy
Ratios & Reversals.
holy grail
always right under our
very gnosis
converse action
(any 2 or 3 or more gathered
together to bray )
Steven Pinker (cognitive linguist) claims
every utterance carries 2 agenda:
1) taking care of business (TCB)—or
as a student from Mallory’s classes called it:
Logistics and
2) negotiating relationship – which
is a horse of another color: a see me, hear me,.
touch me, feed me, like me or dislike me kind
of deal.
Can you imagine you or someone flying to
Chicago to deliver a professional presentation,
bullets and power points on “Creativity in
Education,” say, or “Rubric Analysis Across
the Curriculum,” “Encouraging Free Range
Composition,” the Capstone Mardi Gra
Experience… (open class)
Clearly the subject-object matters & whattsa
matters of the presentations is what Pinker or
anyone would describe as the TCB —Logistics
going on. Profession professing. All THAT
would be what any one would say the
conference is about, what’s happening.
Let the 2 faces above (“figure”) represent that
bottom-line back and forth. Call it Trash-Talk
(as in the stereotypical couple arguing back &
forth re who-took-out the-trash-last: you know,
trying to nail down the facts-of-the-matter
But, while IT is about the TRASH: it’s not
Really About the Trash. It’s about the
Relationship (background) and the trash-talk
is mere token for ongoing negotiation of
relationship. (holy grail or holistic-y if nu age.)
.
And the same can be said about the Professional
Conference in Chicago concerning creativity
and rubrics and composition and capstones:
mere tokens for
ah, um, er
(wait’ll they get a load of this).
hope they like me
should look good on the resume
& year end report
please
see me
hear me
touch me
feed me
What counts. Really. Need we argue?
Relationship Negotiation. (It’s impossible to do
justice to or characterize this primary aspect of
communication because there are no good terms
for it that don’t drop it down and reduce it to
Taking Care of Business Talk (logistics),
know what I’m saying? : when it’s beyond TCB
& even when one turns to take on the task of
improving one’s relationship-going-on, don’t
you know the realm is collapsed into TCB-talk,
the way Fred Flatlander flattens news of Sphere
as he lectures on his expanding and contracting
experience with circles.
Uncanny.
