Nature Love Redundancy even if Eng & Creative Writer Teachers Don't

General Education in the Face of Obsolescence &
Technological Media Renaissance..

Four thematic tracks make up  the AAC&U conference:
  • General Education Models that Make a Difference
  • Faculty Engagement in General Education
  • Assessment to Document Achievement and Deepen Learning at Multiple Levels
  • Institutional Leadership and Capacity for Learning-Centered Reform

"We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking
we used when we created them."

"The only thing that interferes with my learning is my education."

Albert Einstein waxing wise-guy . "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah," we say: "Cute.
That’s easy for you to day, genius! "

I couldn’t  even begin to describe & characterize the “kind of thinking”
we use & abuse now, let alone some “kind of thinking” beyond, antithetical:
Call it Common sense?

Then the antidote, uncommon sense would be antagonistic, strange,
diabolical, counter-intuitive. B.B. Wolf knocking at our doors.
Ecoillogical.  Nonsense for crying out loud. No sense at all.

Neils Bohr: " I see we are approaching paradox,
we must be making progress."

Ray Anderson, our Green hero of Industry & much touted graduation
speaker  of a couple years ago, said similar stuff:  Our universities...
continue to teach and operate in the system that is destroying
the biosphere. Adherence to the old mind-set,
the old curricula,
obsolete pedagogy, and shortsighted  planning are producing
graduates who are trained to perpetuate the destruction  of
the biosphere

Imagine (if you can) a 3-day workshop conducted as a Quaker Meeting.
No agenda.  Circle of disciplinarians facing each other:  waiting for the
Spirit of the Whole (if not the holy)  to move across  waters so to
speak, hands across the sees:. to  inaugurate, initiate, originate
emergent values and properties.

That would be awesome.

Otherwise: pack it in and up with prearranged aims, goals,
measurable and assessmental purposes: you might as well
know you're going to get what you pray for--some variant
on some familiar form or other, same old same old.

(Need we argue? Bring it on. Anytime. Or what's a college
for? )

xxxooo, Sam
