Wednesdays and every other Friday

fiction & linguistics, 19thc American
Writers and attempt to encourage you
to talk among yr selves or at least think
-out-loud maybe give you points for
participation so we can discuss and
you don’t just have to listen to me
(though take down what I say because
it’ll probably be on the final) and although
all items I assign for reading are available
on line with commentary, I want you to
buy the text & realize what I say will be
what counts whatever else you google
and dig up: how else assess and evaluate?
I retain the right to give you pop quizzes
to ensure you do the reading as I know
you’re under pressure from all them other
courses to getRdone and I don’t want you
slacking on mine just because I might not
be so rigorous, know what I mean? Give
you an inch, but don’t take mile—how’m
I going to look if it gets around I’m easy
as Sunday morning?
schola: “leisure time.” In Europe they call
it gymnasium – “naked training.”
(When I was your age I typed my papers
on a big Royal with rubber tipped keys
and erased errors with a hard round rubber
disk and whisk. No Wite-Out till the early
60’s. Mistakes: a pain in the ass: be careful
be very careful to avoid erasure after
erasure after erasure. )
