Rationalizing Slack-to-Rigor Ratios

Never on Friday Lecture

Dear Dialecticians, Humanists, and Readers of  American Literature.

              IT’s an Environmental Issue
              IT, I said.
Do I got to be spelling IT out for you?

The Value of Wasting Time
The Value of Using/ABUSING Time

Which of these 2 representations would you say is “privileged” as
the Dominant Paddy Wack?

Why?

1,) The practice of dialectic is to put genuine and hostile opposition “in play” letting
neither team win or lose so as to generate the possibility of a  3rd Term which
embraces and does no injustice to both or to the ongoing rivalry and agon (contest) always going on and on.

Call this AESTHETIC  (I.E, “the” – the view, theme, thesis, theatre)

2) The tendency of the Humanist (allow me to generalize for the sake of argument)
is to judge ONE as better than the OTHER., sending the other to the cellar (say)
and welcoming the ONE into the kitchen.

Call this ETHIC – the Moral View.

3) You American Literature Surveyors:  this cartoon represents potentially an archetypal opposition that might serve as a FRAME for your reading over the semester: the work & and service ethic which drives us on the one hand, and the Ivory Tower (desert island)  School Mode (you know: “school” from schola – “leisure time” ) which has been  your experience since early on, yes?

No?   You haven’t felt the leisure time of “school?”
Nothing but work & service?  Pity

Feel free to comment, react, respond, argue, or what’s a college for?..
Hit Reply to All.   Not reason the Good Times need to be confined
to twice-a-week in cinderblock under fluorescence, true?  Not these
days any more.

Best, Sam
