playboy & puritan & why can't they Just Get Along

Composing Mode
(Making)

Consuming Mode
(Give&Taking)

Can you see the distinction here?
I wish you’d turn it way up, separate
and polarize the values and characters
of the two—so they don’t bleed
together: contaminate.,

THEN, we might could wonder
at the relationship: between
composing and consuming and
whether they Just Get Along—in
our own self & selves, or Collectively
and “environmentally.”

My experience in the “making” mode
is that it is antithetical to Give & Take
and Conserve & Save and that a
loose, throw-it-away, wasteful
nonchalance characterizes my getting
IT right, maybe—and maybe not:
maybe getting IT wrong.
What a mess.

My experience in the consuming mode
(give & take) is conservative: get it
right get it right get it right., Waste not
waste not, want not want not.

I’m not saying these 2 don’t complement:
of course they do: and THAT’s the issue:
How? I call it a liberal art—the practice
of learning and practicing the relationship
(ratios, reasoning ) between waste and
conservation, save and throw, mess around
and straighten up.

I used to call IT the Playboy & the Puritan &
How They Get Along when I was teaching
composition (composing) but the then Dean
didn’t like that terminology. Said it might
offend some of the students.

It could. I can see that.

Well, it offended her, that’s for sure. I might
just as well have thrown my McDonald’s trash
out the car window, watch it dance across Rt 70
in my rear view mirror and blow up the entrance
to Gray Eagle trailer park.

Gazing up into the darkness I see
myself as a creature driven and
derided by vanity; and my
eyes burned with anguish
and anger.

It’s a crime of discrimination either way,
all the way round. No wonder I feel
guilty all the time. Makes good
descriptive sense.
