We are all, I assume, engaged in improving our own teaching, and our students' learning. (a.c.)
our “terms” are always inadequate and can
never do justice to HAP hap-ening but never
the less are necessary (and insufficient) and
that we ourselves are always similarly
committing our crimes of fashioning against
the whole, ripping-off what we need according
to our species and individual purpose, aims,
goals, always golden intentions, and so we
know we are Liable & Accuse-able (never not),
aren’t we possibly going to Be in Play with a
different mind-set, attitude, outlook (no matter
what sides we take on any given issues) and
fight a much better fight than if all of the above
is not acknowledged and factored in?
What? You disagree?
Bless your heart: bring it on.
We’ll engage.
Environ Mental Studies and Leadership
The
its approach to academics. Rather than continuing
the basic structure of past decades, AFS needed
to distinguish its program from other institutions.
It needed to plead its own case for survival.
Dr. Randolph and his new staff responded to this
challenge by infusing the traditional ideals of the
school with experimental theories of evaluating
students' progress.
Holding fast to the moral and work ethics that
the founders of AFS had laid down, the "new"
school doctrine emphasized the individuality of
each student's experience at the school.
Class ranks and grades were done away with.
Students would instead enter in on projects,
determined by his interests and abilities.
Under the guidance of selected staff members,
each boy progressed at his own rate, incorporating
work, academic and religious studies, and service
to the community into his project.
Graduation depended upon approval by a
committee of staff and faculty. The addition
of special, post-secondary vocational courses
in the mid-30s offered exceptional students
an opportunity to further their education.
This new system encouraged self-motivation
and intense personal drive. Consequently,
many boys fell short of their mark.
Yet for even more, this specialized approach
to formal education fit well with their own
heritage of self-sufficiency and offered them
a chance to highlight their specific skills
while broadening their horizons in other subjects.
