Nor Chronicle-of-Hire-Ed Worthy


Dear Colleagues in the spirit of com-petition,
co-operation, and co-laboring  genius.

Here's a distinction, arbitrary of course
( all distinctions are lines drawn in the
sand so to speak & anyone can choose
to consider or ignore, true? Need we argue?) .

 I.     Learning ENVIRONMENT
   Climate, Atmosphere, shared Mind-set,
    collective Attuide on the one hand

   and then on the other hand all the

  II          Learning-Going-On

activities,
practices,
courses,
workshops.
events,
guest lectures,
panel discussions,
classroom videos,
small group projects,
texts and contexts,
capstones & service,
facilities,  majors and
minors and general
education

Or rather BOX on the one hand,
boxed on the other.  Bubble &
bubbled. Parceled and parts
and parties on the other. .

Environment / Activities
Context / Texts
Background / Figures
Attention-Deficiency / ADD
Nail-it Down / Keep it Circulating
,
Work / Play
    

etc.

Any one can add to this paradigm of
“hostile”
distinctive and oppositional pairs
which
are  also complementary and related
(if we
don’t mush or ignore the differences)

          

 

We can focus
( and the collective, cultural,
customary attention can be focused)
on the 2-faces-action going  on (figure, say)
OR we can attentend to the Holy Grail-like
emerging  relationship going on (background,
context, environment) – which is not on the
same level of ontological type as the 2-faces
of Eve.

2-Faces-Focus can easily occlude the emerging
relationship (context, background, environment)

I know: I'm redundant and mixing metaforce
like crazy hoping  anyone might catch the gist.
(genius: you know--spirit, will of the whisper
& come labor on.)

The possibility for  failure or ignore-ance is
monumental. Risky business.  Throwing
rice at a rhino. Scattergood.  
 
We  (and the collective) can be focusing on the text(s)
and ignoring the Context (environment) inside which the
textual harassment is going on

 
Or: figure can be shifted to background while the
background, then, becomes figure,  but this is a
dia-bolical switch
because it throws apart the
conventional   symbolic custom or culture
habit already in place (nailed down)

 
Can you juggle

1)  “figure” (text) and
2)  “background” (context) and
3)   the figure-background-shift
     (“beyond” text & context)going on?

All 3?

 
Sort of like talking out of 3 sides of the mouth at once.
A Getting IT deal—like a joke.
  A kind of eureka game.
If I have  to  spell it out, who can Get IT?

IT, I said.                          
                             no-sense-at-all

       common sense      nonsense
  
All three:  Mothers of Invention and yet we privilege
common  sense and under-privilege the other 2.
No wonder we live lives of quiet desperation..
Need we argue?
  Anyone?  Improve my
terms and images. Or what's a college for?
