("toward frontiers yet unknown" series)
Self Reliance: Hell Yes.
Self Reliance: Hell No
Hello: "hell" either way.
(My Classroom Environmental Fantasy: to build
an ice cream parlor in hell, and do no injustice to
either hot or cold. )
It makes really very good sense to conform—
even though that word carries negative stigma
(and you might wonder why), certainly to conform
to the conventions you care about, the disciplines,
say, your majors and minors and those around you:
to conform to the common sense of peers &colleagues
& family: to be savvy and appreciative of the web of
communication, the shared environment of outlook
& procedure, to “fit in” (which word, by the way,
is the meaning of ART (I. E. ar: to join, juncture)
It makes really good sense to ignore conformity,
ignore convention, convenience, and turn a deaf\
ear if not shun all those surrounding you in order
to listen to (‘obey”) your own individual “genius”
(spirit) & what provokes: calls, engages you and
your idiot-syncratic ways—which, if you follow
deeply to the “sources” (so to speak) you’ll find
that it brings you to a sense of the whole—and
that “what is truefor you in your private heart (“idios”)
is true for all myn".
Inadequately of course, the sense of the whole..
That should go without saying.
Mybe you might improve my terms, sharpen up the
thesis/antithesis here and don’t let either side “win”
—ever. Both are true and neither to be sacrificed
to the other without considerable pain. Look for
the third term, the synthesis that embraces both
thesis and antithesis (the symbolical and the
diabolical).
Ok - pain regardless. Pain if there’s a sacrifice.
Pain in the ongoing opposition. Pain’s the given:
suffering it (to stand-up from-under), that’s the
achievement, the liberal art. Samsara, as Phil
just told me. Salvation if you’re not Buddhist.
Individuation if you're a humanistic psychologist
Empowerment if you are of the new age. The
more terms for it the better.
The more Ways of Talking about IT, the better.
time? Need we argue?
Hit reply or reply-to-all if you care to sustain
this bit of academic play assuming that's what
a college is for..
xxxooo, Sam
