Losing My Religion

“Neither logic nor sermons convince.”
                                              Whitman

Who reads the  Surgeon’s Warning
on a pack of   Lucky Strikes and quits?

Students:cut themselves, binge &
purge, trade tabs of ritalin & adderall
to adjust attention spans, jog compulsively,
haul bottled water to class: as ecologically
compelling as Poe  & his House of Usher,
Hawthorne’s 7  Gables, Emerson’s
American Scholar& Divinity School
Addresses.

Environmental Issues. Sustainability Concerns. .

I told my old man: “you got an ego grand
as anyone.”  “Yeah,” he said “and
mine’s crucified.”

Crucial: the difference between religion on
the one hand  and on the other: spiritualism.

I'm not too religious but spiritually one with
the universe, at  home in the cosmos: winds
in the willows call me out by name, little
birdies tell me the whole truth, my idios
daemon guides me thru terms of desire &
shadows of depth: mused & amused.

Neither logic nor sermons convince me
other wise. That’s me in the spotlight.
Spiritual.
