Cause I gotta have Faith
Dear Colleagues Across the Curriculum
Cause I Gotta have Faith
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=883t2Pac8pk
Just finished reading a brilliant student
portfolio on day-to-day agony & ecstasy:
wit, whim, wracked by hate and desire—
liars, triggers, & straw berries o my.
Several years ago we had some brief
small excitement about “transformation”
as liberal art. Sustainability beat it out.
“Faith & Higher Ed as WWC”
I myself am religious as hell but not spiritual
worth a damn. Full of faith, never the less.
A couple times so imbued spiritually I had
to take a shot of thorazine to quiet down.
Chemically contrary: it sent me running up
and down the halls with restless legs and I
couldn’t speak words for 2 days.
A necessary if insufficient cause for my
being here now.
My dad aspired to assume the college
chaplain-ship the year Fred Ohler planned
a sabbatical (field lying fallow for a year)
I drove him over from Durham for the
interview. We climbed Mt Pisgah together,
looking east of Eden toward the promised land.
Swannanoa.
Two formers students killed themselves here.
One with a knife in the neck. The other jumped
off the bridge. Both self-described spiritual
voyagers: their frontiers yet unknown.
Stalwart pioneering. Harrowing.
Mushrooms. LSD. Weed. Peyote—talk of
psychotropics, adderal, Ritalin, alcohol &
nicotine, jogging, bottle water, vegan-
vegetarianism, hook-ups admittedly majoring
in Anesthetics even while marching to the
beat of the environmental drummer.
.
An environmental issue. Faith. Spiritual but not
particularly religious. An emerging value and
phenomena.
Credo ut intelligam.
I believe in order to know.
Eggs come first: immaculate conceptions.
Good reason for everything. Need we argue? .
