Assessment of High-Impact Practices:
Using Findings to Drive Change in the
Compass Project 
 
 Using campus-level assessment of high-
impact practices (HIPs) drawn from the
National Survey of Student Engagement
(NSSE), this article reports  on the trends
in student participation in HIPs and the
associated learning out comes that were
analyzed via the initial aggregation of
data at the state system level and, then,
ultimately through the aggregation of
system level data to inform national
                  findings.

The problem with talking about ultimate things
that can’t be talked about without violent
reduction & flat-lining . . .
 
       (not lawnmower repair
        the Kardashians, how
       to get  to San Jose,
       debt ceiling deadlines,
       weather, starvation in
       Sudan, 401 (k’s) &
       retirement benefits,
       difference between
       theater & film, German
       migration in the 19thc.
       parking, teenage mothers,
       meltdown, nuclear &
       enrollment; the surreal
       and dada movements
       in WWI, & aggregation
        of system level data
     to inform national findings . . .
         all talk-about-able  )
 
is that I have to talk about them anyway,
a necessity  beyond me; & my blather &
towering babble have no chance of doing
justice  & silence is no option, no satis-
fiction if  I do or if I don’t no no no.
 
I would wage local war&peace if I could
figure how to initiate, inaugurate, originate,
authorize, generate & start it up, my I.E.D’s:
nothing but rice off a rhino.
