Too Late, the Misanthrope?
How to characterize a 4th party, neither
Republican nor Democrat not conservative
and not liberal either though maybe both
to the degree they can Just Get Along?.
Libertarian won’t do—while it jumps the
double bind tar-baby of the 2 party system,
it’s basically individualistic in spirit, Ayn
Random-like and that other blond who
flips her hair and gripes about ongoing
concern with 9/11 victims: misconstruing
Emerson, all of them, which is easy to do.
Thoreau, yes, Misanthrope: “I wouldn’t walk
across the street to save the world," he says,
them mass of men leading lives of quiet
desperation. Though he claims to be
crowing cock-a-doodle to
wake us up--neighbors
at least..
Mark Twain, Misanthrope, yes:
“That Damned Human Race.”
“ That Damned Moral Sense.”
I think he said both of those
things. Pretty sure. Of course
he might have been merely
describing—not judging at all.
Could have been sympathetic
actually. Us--poor damaged
human race and our pathetic
moral sense. …pat, pat,
patronizing. Like a loving
father.
The point is: misanthropy.
Humanism has been barbed
wired behind its enlighten-
mental age-of-reason’s why
cause-&-effecting ways, like
a miner in a mind shaft
studying darkness with his
miner’s lamp. aHA!
“We are clapped into jail by our Consciousness,”
says Emerson. “I see,” says the blind man, and
he doesn’t see at all, slouching through the valley
of the deaf.
Of course, these things can’t be said, without
resistance generating defense & offense
& homeland security issues:
me, Epimenides calling
kettles black &
Cretan’s
liars.
Who do I think I am?
I’m only human.
Beyond Good & Evil,
Goodies & Weasels, not to
diminish them nor our ongoing
dysfunctional relationship, but
to get unstuck: in but not of.
Beyond.
Like temperature is to hot & cold,
like building ice cream parlors in hell
& a good&evil time is had by all.
.
Misanthropy: it’s not the goodNevil
going on that thickens the bozone level,
but the denial and cover-it-up, my
fig-leaf inadequacy.
Where are the words that do descriptive
justice to the inadequacy of the human race
—demoralizing sure, but not demoralizing?
Human, all too human nurture.
xxxooo, Sam
